MRSA Rates Six Times Higher in People With HIV

Rates of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infection—drug-resistant staph infection acquired outside the hospital setting—are significantly higher in the Chicago area among people with HIV than in people who are HIV negative, according to a study published in the April 1 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important human pathogens and methicillin-resistant variants (MRSAs) are a major cause of hospital and community-acquired infection.
A recent study financed by the European Union, published by PLOS (Public Library of Sciences), demonstrates that the prevention and control of MRSA infections is not only efficient at hospital level but would become even more efficient if it was done within a network of hospitals in the same country and ideally between countries.

SHARING A HOSPITAL ROOM RAISES RIKS OF HOSPITAL-ACQUIRED INFECTION

Sharing a hospital room increases dramatically the risk of being contaminated by an infection, according to a study by Dr. Dick Zoutman's team at Queen University, Ontario, Canada.  The costs for treating these infection are so high for hospitals, that It would be far less expensive to build more private rooms. ANTIBACTERIAL UNIFORMS TO FIGHT HOSPITAL--ACQUIRED INFECTIONS

Health care staff uniforms, particularly for the staff delivering  direct care to the patient, play an important role in the fight against hospital-acquired infections. In Quebec hospitals, it is  unfortunate to note that basic hygiene rules concerning uniforms are still not respected with all the required attention: doctors or nurses may be observed walking in the corridors still wearing their surgery ward uniforms, and it has been widely reported that the same staff wear their uniforms in and out of hospitals. A Quebeccompany, Protec-Style, may bring a solution to this problem by producing antibacterial uniforms.
